In 2003 Bareilles recorded her first demo, Careful Confessions, which eventually got the attention of Epic Records, who signed her to a deal.

Over the course of the next three years, she worked the club scene, performing at open-mic nights, landing a few paid gigs and eventually performing at festivals. After graduating in 2001, Bareilles, who remained in southern California, set out to pursue her dream of making it as a musician.
